What is mentoring?

Mentoring is when someone with experience supports you by sharing insights, asking questions, and helping you think things through.

It’s not about giving you all the answers—it’s about helping you build confidence, set goals, and make your own decisions.

Why have a mentor?

  • A mentor can help you:
  • Build skills and confidence
  • Explore careers and university options
  • Set goals and take action
  • See challenges from a new perspective
  • Learn from real experiences

Making the most of mentoring

  • To get the best out of it:
  • Take responsibility for your own progress
  • Be clear about your goals
  • Start conversations and stay engaged
  • Be open to feedback and new ideas
  • Respect your mentor’s time
  • It’s also a good idea to agree how often you’ll communicate from the start.

What can a mentor help with?

  • Mentors can support you with things like:
  • Choosing a university or course
  • Understanding different careers

Questions you could ask

  • If you’re not sure where to start, try asking:
  • How did you get into your career?
  • What does a typical day look like?
  • What advice would you give someone starting out?
  • Are there any useful resources you’d recommend?
