Having a mentor can help you aim high, make decisions, and build confidence about your future. This guide shows you how to get started.

Getting set up

Follow these simple steps:

  • Sign up to Marymount Network using your Marymount email (no photo)
  • Your account will be approved by the Alumnae Team
  • A parent/guardian must give permission before your account is activated
  • Read and sign the Code of Conduct
  • Explore the platform and search for a mentor

Contacting a mentor

Once you find someone you’d like to connect with:

  • Send a message using “Marymount Mentor Request”
  • Keep your message short, polite, and clear
  • Say why you chose them and what help you’re looking for
  • All communication must stay on Marymount Network. Do not share or ask for contact details—this is for your safety.

Getting off to a good start

A strong mentoring relationship is built on respect and effort. Try to:

  • Be polite, enthusiastic, and grateful
  • Do some research before asking questions
  • Be clear about what you want help with
  • Keep messages thoughtful and not too long
  • Remember—mentors are busy professionals, so use their time wisely.

What happens next?

Your mentor will either accept or decline your request:

  • If they accept, you can start messaging
  • If they decline, don’t worry—just try someone else
  • Once you’re connected, agree how often to message and keep them updated on your progress.

Following up

Good follow-up makes a big difference. After hearing from your mentor:

  • Send a short thank you message
  • Summarise what you’ve learned
  • Share updates and next steps
  • This shows you’re engaged and helps build a strong connection.

Staying safe

  • Only use Marymount Network to communicate
  • Messages may be monitored for safeguarding
  • Speak to the Future Pathways Team or a trusted adult if you have concerns

Looking ahead

At the end Grade 12, you’ll be invited to upgrade your account so you can stay connected as an alumna.

If you have any questions, speak to the Alumnae Team.

Have your say
